The Holy Spirit - Part 1 - Jesus' Anointing

[original text in italics]

In scripture, Jesus is referred to as the Messiah [the Anointed One in Hebrew] and as the Christ [the Anointed One in Greek]. He is the Anointed One who would ascend to God the Father to receive his kingdom, dominion, and glory, and who would reign over the nations.

DANIEL 7:13-14 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came [was brought] one like a son of man, and he came to [went to, continued until he arrived to] the Ancient of Days [God] and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”

PSALM 110:1-2 The Lord [Yahweh, God] said to my Lord [master, Jesus], “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of your enemies!”

MATTHEW 26:63-65 And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power [Miraculous ability, symbolic of God the Father] and coming [going] on the clouds of heaven [to God, Ref: DANIEL 7:13 above].” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy..."

In the old testament, a king would be divinely anointed by God with the Holy Spirit coming upon him (otherwise, he would be short-lived). As a physical sign of this spiritual anointing, a prophet [one who declares God's message] or priest would pour oil on him. Similarly, and as prophesied by Isaiah, Jesus was anointed [marked, smeared, chosen, consecrated, set apart] by God with the Holy Spirit. First, God sent the Holy Spirit upon Jesus prior to being baptized in water. Then, when Jesus was resurrected, he was presented before the Father, crowned as King, and received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, which was the culmination of his anointing:

ISAIAH 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed [marked, smeared, chosen, consecrated, set apart] me..

JOHN 1:32-34 John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

LUKE 4:17-18 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him [Jesus]. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me…

ACTS 2:32 [Jesus] Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit

Therefore, when Jesus ascended to the Father and received the Holy Spirit, he received the fullness of that anointing as King over all the heavens and the earth.  It was his coronation into his kingship and reign.

ZECHARIAH 14:9 And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and his name one.

MATTHEW 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

PHILIPPIANS 2:9-11 Therefore God also has highly exalted him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [Anointed One] is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

REVELATION 11:15 “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah [Anointed One], and he will reign for ever and ever.”

Jesus was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, so that all people might serve Him.  Once Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit, he then poured out his anointing on all his followers that they might give Him glory by the way they live and reign on the earth. Next, we will explore what this pouring out of his anointing means for us today.

ACTS 2:17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.
